December 02, 2018

Esperanza Diaz, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Medical Director of the Yale Hispanic Clinic and Latino Behavioral Health System, has been selected to receive the American Psychiatric Association’s 2019 Simon Bolivar Award.

The award honors a prominent advocate for Hispanic people and through an associated lecture sensitizes APA membership to the mental health problems and goals of the Hispanic population.

Diaz will present at the APA’s 2019 Annual Meeting, which will be held in San Francisco in May.

Her professional interests are focused on improving mental health services and education to Hispanics. She is a member of the American Society of Hispanic Psychiatry and a leadership member of the APA Hispanic Caucus.

At Yale, she is Associate Director of the Yale Psychiatry Residency Program and provides teaching and supervision for Yale medical students, psychiatry residents, and trainees from other disciplines, such as psychology, nursing, and social work.

She has received numerous research grants and was the inaugural recipient of the APA Member in Training Mentor Award. She also received the Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents from the APA.

In 2012 she was honored by the Yale Department of Psychiatry with its Stephen Fleck Faculty Award for exemplary teaching and clinical practice.
