VA Connecticut Research Week to be Observed May 14-16

April 24, 2019

National VA Research Week will be observed at VA Connecticut on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, May 14 – 16, in Building 2, first floor Rotunda/Patient Education Center. National VA Research Week is an annual event that celebrates the accomplishments of the VA Research Program and recognizes the researchers, veterans, and partners who support the program. This year the National Research Week will be held May 13 – 17, 2019, and the theme is “The Science of Hope.” This important event gives VA Medical Centers an opportunity to showcase the numerous achievements of VA researchers and the role they play in providing high quality care for veterans and advancing medical science. Creative displays, staff interactions, and informative seminars help educate veterans, our elected representatives, and others about VA research and its impact on treating and preventing disease and disability, not only for Veterans, but all Americans.

VA Connecticut investigators are involved in more than 450 active research projects in medicine, psychiatry, neurology, surgery, dermatology and radiology. More than 150 principal investigators are directing work on these projects. Most projects are funded following national peer review. The majority of the investigators are clinicians on the medical staff. Total research funding from VA and non-VA sources in FY 2018 was $48 million. VA research funds totaled $21 million.

The Research Week Information Fair table will be staffed with representatives from the PRIME Center (Pain), National Center for PTSD, Preventative Cardiology and Rehabilitation, Alcoholism Center, Geriatrics and Mental Illness. In addition, there will be a “Research Moment” presentation at the Director’s Monthly Leadership Meeting on Tuesday, May 14, attended by service chiefs and many supervisors from all hospital departments.
