Fernandez appointed to Health and Human Services panel

Thomas V. Fernandez, MD, Assistant Professor in the Child Study Center and of Psychiatry, has been appointed to serve as a member of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Behavioral Genetics and Epidemiology Study Section, Center for Scientific Review.

Fernandez’s term begins July 1, 2018 and ends June 30, 2024. Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements, and honors.

Study sections review grant applications submitted to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), make recommendations on those applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of science.

Fernandez is a child psychiatrist and psychiatric geneticist with an active clinical practice and research laboratory. His research interests include anxiety disorders and genetics, and his efforts have resulted in the discovery of genetic mutations in Tourette syndrome, motor stereotypes, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADHD, and anxiety disorders using next generation DNA sequencing.
