Biography

Dr. Hellenbrand is a pediatric cardiologist who completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine before starting as a faculty member at Yale, for which he served for 24 years. In 1999, he became the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization lab at Columbia University Medical Center, before assuming the role of Director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at Columbia. In September of 2011, he returned to his roots at Yale, where he served as Section Chief for Pediatric Cardiology at Yale University School of Medicine.

Dr. Hellenbrand has an international reputation as a leader in the field of pediatric and adult congenital cardiac catheterization. He was instrumental in the development of transcatheter devices to close congenital heart defects including ASDs and PDAs. Most recently, he was one of the principal investigators in the U.S. trials of the trans-catheter implanted Melody valves. He remains very active in the field of congenital heart catheterization, performing procedures, teaching others, and lecturing regularly.
