Glutathione and the aging brain

Trial Purpose and Description

The Specific Aims for this pilot study are: 1. To determine the feasibility of a study to quantify intracerebral levels of GSH as measured by 1H MRS at 4 Tesla in young and old individuals; 2. To begin defining the relationship between peripheral markers of metabolic status and intracerebral GSH; 3. To explore how aging alters the relationships between intracerebral GSH levels, human functional brain connectivity, and neurocognitive performance.

Ages: 18 years and younger

Gender: Both


Eligibility Criteria

Age 18-35 or age 65-85 years.

Exclusion criteria
Diabetes, kidney, or liver disease. 
History of major heart disease. 
History of stroke or other neurologic and psychiatric diseases. 
Smoking.
Inability to enter MRI due to claustrophobia or metal in the body
For women: pregnancy, seeking pregnancy, or breastfeeding
