Dr. Smith received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University, his medical degree from the Harvard Medical School, and his residency/fellowship training at The Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Dana Farber Cancer Center. 

John Krystal, MD

Dr. Krystal, who has been at Yale for ~40 years, is the ideal candidate to serve as the permanent co-PI, joining Dr. Smith to lead the Yale program.

As a pediatric nurse practitioner, Margaret Grey, DrPH, RN, FAAN, is well aware of the toll that chronic illness takes on young patients. That’s why she has pursued research that aims to improve the lives of children with type 1 diabetes and prevent type 2 diabetes in high-risk children and adolescents.

Melinda L. Irwin, MD

An athlete her entire life, Melinda Irwin, PhD, MPH, originally planned on specializing in orthopedics. But college courses in exercise physiology, nutrition and human anatomy led her to shift gears to public health. 

Marcella Nunez-Smith, MD, MHS

Deputy Director of Health Equity Research and Workforce Development

Growing up in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, a health professional shortage area, Marcella Nunez-Smith, MD, MHS, remembers countless stories of loved ones and members of her community who struggled with their health or died prematurely. That experience led her to pursue a career in medicine and conduct research that focuses on vulnerable populations and their interactions with healthcare systems.

To further bolster, diversify, and expand the depth and expertise of the YCCI leadership team, Eric Jose Velazquez, MD, Robert W. Berliner Professor of Medicine (Cardiology); chief, Section of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine at YSM; chief, Cardiovascular Medicine, Yale New Haven Hospital; physician-in-chief, Heart and Vascular Center, Yale New Haven Health, has agreed to join our team as deputy director for clinical trials innovation.

Tesheia Johnson, MBA, MHS

Tesheia Johnson, MBA, MHS, is Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer of YCCI and the Associate Director for Clinical Research for Yale School of Medicine, where she provides leadership and direction in the area of clinical research.

Kelly Anastasio, COC, CPC-H, CPC-I, CPC-P

Associate Director of Clinical Trial Resources

Kelly Anastasio is the associate director of clinical trial resources and oversees recruitment and development . Prior to joining YCCI, she spent six years as clinical research and reimbursement manager in the Department of Orthopaedics, where she was responsible for managing clinical trial activity including budget development, contract negotiations, clinical trials matrix, and operational flow. 

Rhoda Z. Arzoomanian, MSM, BSN, RN

Associate Director of YCCI and Yale Cancer Center

Rhoda Z. Arzoomanian, MSM, BSN, RN, joined Yale in 2014 as Associate Director of YCCI and Yale Cancer Center. A nationally recognized expert in cancer clinical research, clinical trials databases, and the management of an NCI-designated cancer center, Ms. Arzoomanian has over 25 years of clinical research experience. 

Alyssa K. Gateman, MPH, CCRP

Associate Director of Quality Assurance 

Alyssa Gateman, MPH, CCRP, is a recognized and respected QA expert who brings a wealth of experience to Yale’s QA team. She joined Yale from the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, where she most recently served as director of the Quality Assurance Office for Clinical Trials (QACT).

Helen A. Seow, PhD

Helen Seow, PhD, oversees YCCI’s scientific operational and research administration, and plays a key role in developing and implementing programs that link clinical and translational research with basic science research. 

Sandra Trevino-Ranalli, MSSW, LCSW

Associate Director for Community Research

Sandra Trevino-Ranalli recently joined the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI) as Associate Director for Community Research.  In her role, she is responsible for the development and updating of the strategic long-range plans for the Yale's community engagement activities to support clinical research at Yale to promote bi-directional  collaborations between the clinical researchers and community partners.
