Potenza honored by Turkish Green Crescent Society for research work on addictions

Marc Potenza, MD, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry, in the Child Study Center and of Neuroscience, received the Turkish Green Crescent Society’s Phoenix Award for Academics at a ceremony April 20 in Istanbul, Turkey.

The award is given every year to deserving individuals, institutions, and organizations that support the fight against addictions, and for implementing “addiction-free, healthy living.”

Potenza is an internationally renowned expert in the field of research on problem gambling and associated addictions. He is director of the Center of Excellence in Gambling Research and director of the Yale Program for Research on Impulsivity and Impulse Control Disorders. He has consulted with many national and international organizations on matters of addiction.

The Turkish Green Crescent Society was founded in Istanbul in 1920 as a non-governmental organization for fighting addictions. It is working in the field of drug, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, and technology addictions. It promotes advocacy, prevention, and rehabilitation of addiction at national and international levels.

Tayyip Erdogan, President of the Republic of Turkey, attended the April 20 ceremony and congratulated Potenza on his honor.

Potenza has received numerous awards for his work. In 2016 he received the Lifetime Research Award from the National Council on Problem Gambling.
