Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Belonging

Since its start, WHRY has worked to advance diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging

Health Equity

For 25 years, WHRY has remained at the forefront of ensuring health equity for women. We do this by remediating the gap in studying women’s health and sex-and-gender differences that influence health outcomes. WHRY has initiated needed research as well as awarded over $5.6 million dollars in pilot funds to Yale faculty to investigate causes of high morbidity and mortality for women. New external grant dollars of $110 million resulting from the data of these pilots studies alone allows investigators to pursue their findings.

Additionally, faculty who are women have been helped by WHRY through mentoring and research support. For example, among WHRY pilot grant recipients, 60 percent are women.

WHRY’s DEIB Committee

Our WHRY Advisory Council, which includes diverse members of our community, has convened a Diversity, Equity, and Belonging Committee. The committee’s goals are to ensure that:

  • the Advisory Council benefits from different voices and perspectives
  • our words and communications uses language that is culturally sensitive and creates a sense of belonging for all
  • there is an awareness of health disparities and WHRY’s efforts to respond

School-Wide Partnerships to Advance the Careers of Minority and/or Under-Represented Faculty

The center’s commitment to DEIB is enhanced by the participation of Director Carolyn M. Mazure, PhD, as an active member of the Executive Committee of the medical school’s Committee on the Status of Women in Medicine (SWIM). This committee addresses gender equality and advocating for female faculty. Dr. Mazure also has worked closely with the Minority Organization for Retention and Expansion (MORE) since its start. MORE promotes the inclusion of a diverse faculty and school. In addition, Dr. Mazure is a member of the university-wide Institutes and Centers Committee on Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging, created and led by Dr. Gary V. Desir, vice provost for faculty development and diversity. These interactions inform Women’s Health Research at Yale’s direction in all its initiatives and promote the recognition of diversity as a critical component of a vibrant learning environment.

Health Equity Research Collaboration

Dr. Mazure coordinates WHRY’s health equity research efforts with the school’s Office for Health Equity Research, directed by Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith. This collaboration builds on ongoing joint efforts by this office and WHRY to generate research that serves under-studied or marginalized groups and the intersection of these populations.
