I. Pages and Structure Groups

Structure Groups

Structure groups are folders within the Root which contain individual pages and can also contain more structure groups. The navigation of your site will be determined by the hierarchy of structure groups and the pages within them.

The structure groups located in the top level of the Root folder represent the main navigation items for your site. The main navigation will be present across the top of every page of your site, so it should represent the primary categories of content visitors to your site will be looking for. For example, some commonly used main navigation items are "Research," "Faculty," "Contact Us," and "Patient Care."

Any structure groups created within main navigation structure groups represent folders in the left navigation. Left navigation items will only display when visitors are within the main navigation which contains those folders. Structure Groups in the left navigation are used to further divide up content within a particular main navigation item, and are only necessary for larger sites.

To create a structure group:

  1. Navigate to the location in the Root folder where you'd like to create a new structure group.
  2. In the Create tab, select New Structure Group.
  3. In the Name field, enter a three digit prefix followed by an underscore (###_), then the name you would like to appear for the navigation item.
    • The value of the prefix will determine the order in which navigation items appear. Navigation items appear in increasing order from left to right for main navigation items, and in increasing order from top to bottom for left navigation items.
    • For example: entering "030_Patient Care" in the Name field will create a navigation item "Patient Care" which would appear after "020_About Us."
  4. In the Directory field, enter the name of this folder as it will appear in a URL.
    • The directory should be very short and contain only lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens, or underscores.
    • For example: "patient" is a good directory name for a structure group with the Name "030_Patient Care."
  5. All other fields and settings for the structure group should remain their default value, and can be ignored.
  6. In the Home tab, click Save & Close.

Pages are built to display content on your website. For any content to appear on your site, whether it be text, images, documents, maps, etc., a component containing that content must be placed on a page.

Generally, the more content a site contains the more pages a site should have. Technically, all of the content of a website could be built on a single page, but this would not make it easy for visitors to find information! You will use structure groups to create the various sections of your site for specific categories of content, then use individual pages to display the content within that section. To create a new page:

  1. Navigate to the structure group of the Root where you'd like to create a new page.
  2. In the Create tab, click the New Page button. A new tab in your browser will open where you'll enter the properties for the page:
  3. In the General tab:
    1. Name: Just like structure groups, you must enter a ###_ prefix and a name so that the page will appear in the navigation.
      • The first page in a structure group, called a landing page, should be numbered "000_". Every structure group must contain a landing page.
      • For example, the landing page for an "About Us" structure group would be named: 000_About. The following page could be 010_Our Team. You can include spaces in this field after the prefix.
    2. File Name: What is entered in this field will become part of the URL for this page. The file name should be very short and contain no spaces or special characters (e.g. @,%,?, or &).
    3. IMPORTANT: Landing pages (with the 000_ prefix) must be given the file name "index"
  4. All other fields should remain their default value, and can be ignored.

The Component Presentations tab allows you to insert the components which should display on this page. If no components are inserted, the page will be blank. To display content on your page:

  1. Click on the Component Presentations tab to the right of the "General Tab." A blank window will appear in the center.
  2. At the bottom left, click the Insert button.
  3. A window showing the Building Blocks folder for your publication will appear. Locate the folder with the first component you'd like to add to the page.
  4. Select the component by clicking once.
  5. You must also select a Component Template from the drop down menu (these templates are explained in full in the Components and Templates section).
  6. After you have selected the component and the template, hit the Insert button. The component will now appear in the Component Presentations tab.
  7. Repeat steps 3-6 until you've listed all of the components you need on the page. Some pages may only contain one component.
  8. Click the Close button when you are done adding components.
  9. Check to make sure your components appear in the right order on your page.
    • This is determined by how they are listed in the Component Presentations tab. For example, place Banners or Page Titles at the top of the list to ensure that they display at the top of the page online.
    • To change a component's position on the list, click the component and then click the Move up or Move down buttons as needed.
  10. When done, hit Save & Close!
