Pediatric Urology

Why Yale Urology

Yale Urology offers a unique, multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of pediatric urological conditions. We bring together experts and specialists from across Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, our Pediatrics Specialty Centers, and Smilow Cancer Hospital to craft a personalized course of treatment for each patient. It's an unparalleled collection of talent, gathered with a single purpose: to give your child the best care possible.

Innovative Treatment

Yale Urology offers the latest treatments and techniques including minimally invasive approaches such as laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery for a full range of congenital and acquired urological diseases. The length of stay with these procedures has proven to be significantly lower than surgery using traditional methods, allowing your child to return home more quickly than traditional surgery options.

The Pediatric Urology Program also includes multidisciplinary clinics and conferences for patients with spina bifida, stone disease, and urologic fetal anomalies, with special interest in complex urogenital reconstruction and stone disease in children.

Our Team

First-class care for your child starts with our renowned team of physicians directing a personalized course of diagnostic and treatment services.  We recognize that complex urologic problems require the expertise of several specialists for both outpatient evaluation and surgery. For this reason, we collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of experts including fetal medicine specialists, nephrologists, endocrinologists, oncologists, radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, and neurosurgeons.

Compassionate Care for Your Child

At Yale Urology, we provide a family-centered approach to care. We understand that the surgical and treatment process can feel frightening or overwhelming for both you and your child. An integral part of our approach is to provide you with the support you need, in part, through detailed answers and by thoroughly explaining your child’s condition and treatment options. We also let parents visit their children in the ICU and accompany doctors during rounds.

We take extra measures to make sure your child feels safe and comfortable during every visit. Pediatric patients are seen in a child-oriented setting, designed to meet the specific needs and interests of children. Every step in the process takes place with pediatric specialists managing care, while incorporating the expertise of child life specialists.

Pediatric Conditions and Clinics

The Pediatric Urology Program provides comprehensive treatment for genital and urologic problems of infants, children, and adolescents, ranging from common urologic issues such as circumcision and undescended testicles to serious congenital and acquired genitourinary defects.

Whether the condition is considered simple or complex, every child’s case is unique. We work with you to create a complete treatment plan tailored for your child that includes leading-edge diagnostic and treatment techniques and care from multidisciplinary specialists, including orthopedists, endocrinologists, nephrologists, radiologists, and neurosurgeons.

Stone Clinic

Our multidisciplinary pediatric stone team, which includes pediatric nephrologists, urologists, nutritionists, radiologists, and interventional radiologists, provides comprehensive treatment to help children manage their kidney stones from both surgical and medical approaches.

Renal Anomalies Clinic

Many pediatric patients with congenital kidney anomalies will be followed by both pediatric urologists and pediatric nephrologists.   To create a cohesive and integrated plan, we have designed a multidisciplinary approach to the management of many urologic issues, including hydronephrosis, ureteropelvic junction obstruction, ureteral obstruction, multidysplastic kidneys, kidney infections, as well as vesicoureteral reflux.  Pediatric diagnostic radiology, social services and nutritional counseling are on site and can be coordinated with the office visit.  This provides an integrated management approach to our patients, addressing the medical and surgical sides of kidney problems

Multidisciplinary Spina Bifida Clinic

Spina bifida presents unique urologic problems. At Yale Urology, our team of pediatric urologists has extensive experience in treating children with bladder and bowel dysfunction. Surgical strategies include minimally invasive approaches to management of urinary and fecal incontinence, incomplete bladder emptying, hostile bladder, difficult catheterization, and constipation.
