Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month

Educator, scholar, and author Dr. OiYan Poon will discuss her book, “Asian American is Not a Color,” in which a mother seeks to answer her daughter’s questions about race. It is informed by extensive research and interviews with Asian Americans with contrasting viewpoints, and provides a heartfelt and optimistic vision for the future.

Poon is a consultant on higher ed to Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker’s office, an Adjunct Assoc. Professor at the Univ. of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and co-director of the College Admissions Futures Co-Lab. Her work has appeared in The Atlantic, The New Yorker, New York Times, NPR, and Washington Post

PERSPECTIVES FOR INCLUSION

Perspectives for Inclusion is a new lecture series creating insight, exploration, and reflection. Delve into the role each of us plays in creating an inclusive environment. Yale School of Medicine invites leading experts to offer a broader field of vision, and deeper understanding, of the communities we belong to and serve. Continue the conversations with guides to facilitate further consideration of the real-world ramifications for clinical practice and research.

First launched by Dr. Robert “Bob” S. Sherwin, the inaugural director of the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation, the Robert S. Sherwin YCCI All Scholar Day is a celebration of the center’s educational programs and the accomplishments of the trainees and scholars at all levels.

Now in its 20th year, the YCCI has supported 227 junior faculty members. 99 percent of scholars remain engaged in research continuing to successfully compete for independent grants (including ~540 NIH grants) worth over $1.4 billion and publishing approximately 10,800 papers.

The successes of the program are a reflection of Dr. Sherwin’s visionary leadership, tremendous dedication, and passion for training the next generation of clinical and translational researchers. Please join us for this year’s combined celebration of the YCCI trainees and Bob’s incredible legacy.

The event will be held on June 13 starting at 8:30 AM in The Anlyan Center (TAC) Auditorium, 300 Cedar St. The keynote speaker is Darrell Kotton, MD, David C. Seldin Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine.

Darrell N. Kotton, MD is the founding director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine of Boston University and Boston Medical Center. He is a physician-scientist trained in pulmonary and critical care medicine and is the David C. Seldin Professor in the department of medicine and in the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Kotton is an Allen Distinguished Investigator, a Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group advised program of the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. He is also an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigators and the Association of American Physicians. He leads a basic research laboratory, funded continuously by the NIH for the past 20 years, focused on lung regeneration and stem cell biology, and he serves on the NIH’s National Heart Lung and Blood Institute’s Board of External Experts. He is the recipient of Boston University’s Innovator of the Year Award (2025), the American Thoracic Society’s “Recognition Award for Scientific Accomplishments” (2018), the AAMC inaugural national “Research Resources Sharing Award” (2017), the Alpha-1 Foundation’s “Researcher of the Year” (2013) and “Shillelagh” (2010) Awards, Boston University’s Graduate Medical Sciences Educator of the Year Award (2018), and the Robert Dawes Evans Senior Research Mentor Award from Boston University.
