It is important that we take time to pause and recognize the achievements of our department, which include both current members and alumni.
• Joseph Renzulli, MD, and Joseph Brito, MD, have just published a potentially practice-changing paper in JAMA, which could lead to modifying the guidelines on prostate screening and biopsy. Please see the Publications / Feature section below.
• Congratulations are also in order for our distinguished 1997 alumnus, John Phillips, MD, who was recently promoted to chair of the Department of Urology at New York Medical College School of Medicine and director of urology at Westchester Medical Center.
Here are a few upcoming events to keep on your radar:
• At next month’s AUA Alumni Reception, Michel Pontari, MD, will be presented with the inaugural Robert M. Weiss, MD, Distinguished Alumni Medal. This will take place at the Off the Strip Restaurant in Las Vegas, Sunday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m. To RSVP, please look for your invitation via email from Greenvelope.
• Nominations are now being accepted for the 2025 Distinguished Alumni Award. To nominate an alumnus who embodies the spirit of our department across all three academic missions—clinical care, education, and research—please go to this online application. Nominations must be turned in by June 1, 2025.
• On June 18, we will celebrate the graduation of our next generation of urologic leaders. It is also the Bernard Lytton Visiting Professor Day. Presentations, debates, and case reviews will be available in a hybrid format for alumni who wish to attend. This year’s visiting professor will be Chris Gonzalez, MD, MBA, chair of the Department of Urology at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He will share his extensive expertise in genitourinary reconstruction.
• Our Third Annual Bulldog Debates CME conference will take place in New York City at the Yale Club, November 7-9, 2025. Please mark your calendars and stay tuned for more information!
Finally, I want to acknowledge that there is uncertainty both within our organization and across our nation. The best way to address these challenges is to remember why we are here. We are here because of the unwavering commitment we have to our patients, trainees, and colleagues. As long as we stay focused on our mission, Yale Urology will emerge stronger on the other side. I am deeply grateful for each of you.
