Kate: Incontinence Success Story

Many people believe that incontinence is only a geriatric condition. While it is most common in women, incontinence can happen to anyone at any age. Kate experienced that firsthand, when she was diagnosed at age 46.

Kate had tried numerous medical options to treat her incontinence, including seeing three separate doctors, but nothing worked. After almost ten years of coping with the condition, she was referred to Dr. Toby Chai to discuss her surgical options.

After speaking with Dr. Chai, Kate decided it was finally time to have the surgery. “I was miserable" said Kate. "It was on my mind 24 hours a day, I didn’t think there would ever be a solution.” When Dr. Chai relocated to Connecticut to join the Yale Urology team, Kate traveled all the way from Maryland so that he could perform her surgery.

“Incontinence is a deeply personal and humiliating experience and Dr. Chai was great to work with," commented Kate. "He was easily accessible by phone or email to answer any questions that I had. And he always knew the details of my condition––I was a real person to him, not just one of many patients. He is an exceptional doctor.”

Dr. Chai performed two surgeries on Kate. The first was a salvage re-do urethral sling, and the second was an onabotulinumtoxina injection into her bladder. “I’m really happy with the surgeries,” said Kate. “I’m finally enjoying life again instead of always worrying about my incontinence.”
