March 13, 2023

Joao P. De Aquino, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry, has been selected to receive the 2023 American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology (ASCP) Annual Meeting New Investigator Award (NIA).

The ASCP annual meeting is scheduled to be held May 30 to June 2, 2023, in Miami Beach, Florida, with a focus on "The Changing Landscape of Clinical Psychiatry: Novel Therapeutics, Methods, and Assessments."

As a NIA awardee, De Aquino will receive complimentary registration and a travel stipend to attend the meeting. He will present his original research on the analgesic, rewarding, and cognitive effects of plant-based cannabinoids among individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD).

The program includes a closed, expert-led workshop, an opportunity to present a research report at the ASCP Annual Meeting, and a special award ceremony, where awardees will get a chance to meet leaders in the field. Additionally, each NIA recipient will be assigned a meeting mentor to guide them through the meeting and make introductions to others. The event will also feature breakfast roundtables that will provide an opportunity for informal networking with leaders in the field.

De Aquino's research is funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), and he employs behavioral pharmacology, computerized psychophysical methods, and clinical trial approaches to develop novel, non-opioid therapeutics for pain and addiction.
