Dr. Mohsen Karimi is the interim Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the combined Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford. He is board certified in surgery, thoracic surgery, and congenital cardiac surgery. He is also an active member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Congenital Heart Surgeon's Society.

He provides surgical treatment for all types of congenital cardiac defects in pediatric and adult patients. Dr. Karimi’s clinical research interests include the development of improved surgical techniques and blood conservation measures to improve outcomes in pediatric cardiac operations. He has been practicing blood conservation cardiac surgery in children for the last 10 years, having sophisticated heart-lung bypass support and equipment which allows for limited or no blood transfusion during cardiac surgery. He has demonstrated that patients requiring less or no blood transfusion have lower need for heart medications, shorter ventilator support, lower complication rate, and much shorter length of stay in the hospital.

The combined Yale-New Haven and Connecticut Children’s Congenital Cardiac Program was established in 2012 under the umbrella of Northeast Pediatric Specialties, Inc. (NEPS). The premise of this joint program is to incorporate all the experts involved in the treatment of congenital heart disease with a shared commitment to further understand, prevent, and treat all aspects of the cardiac disease in pediatrics and adults with congenital cardiac defects.

The comprehensive children's heart program also includes specialized pediatric cardiologists, neonatologists, intensivists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and postoperative support groups dedicated to provide the best quality of care for children and adults with congenital heart diseases.
