Dr. Melissa Mastroianni is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She has completed two residencies, general and plastic surgery, and is dual board certified in general and plastic surgery. She specializes in breast reconstruction and breast aesthetics. Her other interests include body contouring, complex closures after skin cancer resection, complex abdominal wall reconstruction and free tissue transfer.
Dr. Mastroianni attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for undergraduate and earned a Bachelors Degree in Biochemistry with Honors in Research. She stayed at UW-Madison for medical school as well. Dr. Mastroianni began her general surgery residency in Rochester, New York. She pursued a research fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital performing cutting edge research in hand and face transplantation working to develop a protocol for immune tolerance to reduce the need for systemic immunosuppression after transplantation. Following her fellowship, she transferred to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston to complete her general surgery training.
She completed Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland Combined Program in Baltimore. There she gained extensive experience in microsurgery for breast reconstruction, limb salvage and complex wound management as well as craniofacial trauma management at Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland. It was during her training that she developed a passion for microsurgery and personalized treatment of breast cancer patients to optimize aesthetics of reconstruction. She also developed an interest in emerging technologies to make reconstruction easier on patients from all backgrounds.
