2022 Clinical Study Seed Grant Winners Announced

The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce 2022 recipients of the Clinical Study Seed Grant. Announced in September, the award is designed to kickstart early-stage patient-related investigations with high potential for external funding.

“The awardees’ projects were selected for scientific excellence and direct applicability to surgical patient care,” said Vice Chair of Research, Dr. Peter Gruber.

Applications were reviewed by the Research Advisory Council. Each award totals $5K for a project duration of one year.

2022 Clinical Study Seed Grant Recipients

Edouard Aboian, MD (Vascular Surgery)

“Aortic aneurysm care improvement by early detection and referral to aortic specialist”

Evaluate the ability of a computer-aided triage and notification software based on a deep learning algorithm to identify intermediate to high-risk AAA patients through cross sectional imaging.

Isibor J. Arhuidese, MD MPH (Vascular Surgery)

“The Role of Sickle Cell Hemoglobinopathy in Mitigating Racial Disparities in Carotid Revascularization”

Delineate the prevalence of sickle cell disease and trait in patients undergoing carotid revascularization using a population-based database.

Yan Lee, MD (Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

“The Application of Preoperative Silicone Ointment and Its Effect on Wound Healing.”

Participants will be randomized to either silicone or placebo preoperative ointment to evaluate the effect of preoperative use of silicone.
