The Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome Dr. John Kveton as the founding Section Chief of Otology and Neurotology in the Division of Otolaryngology, and Co-Director of the Skull Base Program at Smilow Cancer Hospital.
“The growth of these programs is a testament to the hard work of our Faculty and staff, especially Drs. Douglas Hildrew, Peter Manes, and Nofrat Schwartz. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Kveton on board to lead our regional growth,” said Dr. Benjamin Judson, Division Chief of Otolaryngology.
Dr. Kveton has an international reputation as a pioneering otologist and neurologist. He performed the first cochlear implant in St. Louis in 1984, and soon thereafter, developed one of the first skull base surgical teams in the country at the Lahey Clinic in Massachusetts.
“It is an honor to return to Yale in a full-time capacity, after many years of partnership. It is great to be home, and in the company of such an outstanding team of faculty, trainees, and staff,” said Dr. Kveton.
A graduate of Yale New Haven Hospital’s surgical residency program, Dr. Kveton joined the YSM faculty as a full-time Professor of Surgery and Neurosurgery in 1989. During his 13-year tenure, he pioneered the use of hydroxyapatite cement in skull base surgery. In 2002, Dr. Kveton joined New Haven’s Ear Nose & Throat Medical and Surgical Group. He returns to Yale after 19 years.
“Dr. Kveton brings a wealth of experience, both as a master surgeon, and as a member of the Yale community — both internal to the Department, and as a community physician. The scope of his perspective is a tremendous asset to all of us; we are grateful for his leadership,” said Department of Surgery Chair, Dr. Nita Ahuja.
Dr. Kveton has published over 100 original articles, reviews and book chapters and serves as an editorial reviewer for several medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Laryngoscope and Otology & Neurotology. He has served as a Senior Examiner for the American Board of Otolaryngology and was a founding examiner for the Neurotology Sub-certification Board.
