The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce the inaugural recipients of the Academic Development Awards, a department initiative launched in late 2019, which supports early-career investigators. Drs. Michael Alperovich, Ramesh Batra, and Cassius Chaar are the 2020 recipients of the awards, which range from $15K for clinical science to $35K for basic science projects.

“These awards formally recognize the Department’s commitment to developing our early-career research faculty, and prime the pump for extramural funding success at the end of the grant cycle,” said Vice Chair of Research, Peter J. Gruber, MD, PhD.

As a career development mechanism, eligibility for the awards is purposefully limited to ladder faculty without previous grant-funding.

“Sponsoring the creativity and innovation of our surgeons is a valuable investment in our future as a thriving academic department,” said Department of Surgery Chair, Dr. Nita Ahuja.

Funding for the winning proposals, detailed below, begins June 1, 2020. Timing for the next cycle has not yet been determined.
