The American College of Surgeons (ACS) have selected Department of Surgery Program Directors, Drs. Peter Yoo and Jonathan Cardella, to lead prestigious initiatives within the Division of Education. General Surgery Residency Program Director, Dr. Yoo will be inducted to the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators as an Associate Member at a virtual ceremony in September. Program Director for Vascular Surgery Residency, Dr. Cardella, has been selected to join the 2021 class of the ACS Certificate in Applied Surgical Education Leadership (CASEL) initiative.

“These ACS initiatives promote surgical educators of the highest caliber. Our program directors’ acceptances are a testament to their devotion and potential as next-generation educators who will lead the future of academic surgery,” said Department of Surgery Chair, Dr. Nita Ahuja.

As an Associate Member of the Academy of Master Surgeon Educators, Dr. Yoo will join a community of distinguished surgical educators who to advance surgical education across all specialties.

“I am humbled and deeply grateful for the support of my colleagues and mentors both here at Yale and around the country who nominated and supported me for this honor,” said Dr. Yoo.

Dr. Cardella is one of an elite group of 25 surgeons admitted to the 2021 CASEL program, which provides the most promising surgical educators in academic centers with tailored skill-building to implement a cutting-edge education project at their home institution. Dr. Cardella's project is a virtual sub-I that will launch in the fall; the new Yale offering is one of only three digital offerings for prospective Vascular Surgery residents, across the country.

“I am honored and proud to be representing Yale and Vascular surgery in this prestigious program. I am confident that the research output will further improve the way we educate medical students in our specialty,” said Dr. Cardella.

Dr. Yoo’s five year term at the Academy begins October 2020. Dr. Cardella’s one-year program also begins in October.
