Department of Surgery faculty members, Drs. Arnar Geirsson, Benjamin Judson, and Derek Steinbacher have each received academic promotion to the rank of Professor, effective July 1.
“These faculty represent the epitome of the next-gen academic surgeon. Their achievements are a testament to their dedication, tenacity, and grit as surgical leaders; and it is a great source of pride to our Yale Surgery community to celebrate their success,” said Department of Surgery Chair, Dr. Nita Ahuja.
The Board of Permanent Officers formally approved the following promotions at its June 24, 2020 meeting:
Dr. Arnar Geirsson, Professor of Surgery (Cardiac Surgery), Clinical Educator track
Dr. Benjamin Judson, Professor of Surgery (Otolaryngology), Clinical Educator track
Dr. Derek Steinbacher, Professor of Surgery (Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery), Clinical Educator track
“Achieving the rank of Professor is the pinnacle of every academic career and not always attained,” said Dr. Alan Dardik, Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs. “To have three of our faculty promoted at one time shows what can be achieved in a thriving academic department culture.”
Dr. Ahuja identified optimization of the promotion process as a strategic focus area in her inaugural State of the Department address in 2018. The department has since facilitated BPO approval of eleven faculty promotions.
“I am especially grateful to Dr. Dardik’s leadership, to the Faculty Advisory Committee, and to our dynamite Office of Faculty Affairs for delivering on that charge,” said Dr. Ahuja.
A formal reception will be held in the spring, gathering guidelines permitting.
