Dr. Dirk Johnson Appointed Medical Director of Surgical Services - SRC

The Department of Surgery is pleased to announce Dirk Johnson, MD, FACS has been appointed Medical Director of Surgical Services at the St. Raphael’s Campus (SRC), effective April 13. Dr. Johnson succeeds Geoffrey Nadzam, MD, who held the Medical Director position at SRC for the past two years and was recently appointed Chief of Surgery at Lawrence + Memorial Healthcare.

"Dr. Johnson has been selected from an outstanding pool of applicants,” said Department of Surgery Chair and Surgeon-in-Chief at YNHH, Nita Ahuja, MD, MBA, FACS. “The COVID-19 crisis has forced all of us to rethink our schedules and our plans; and I am grateful to Dr. Johnson and Dr. Nadzam for managing this transition with such agility.”

Assistant Professor of Surgery (Trauma) for the Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Johnson is the current ICU director at SRC. As Medical Director of Surgical Services at SRC, Dr. Johnson will be responsible for managing the daily workflow of ambulatory functions, and perioperative thru postoperative services on the campus. He will report to the YNHH Vice President of Surgical Services, Maxwell Laurans MD and to Dr. Ahuja in her capacity as Surgeon-in-Chief for YNHH.

"We look forward to working with Dirk in the coming years to further enhance surgical services on the Saint Raphael’s campus and will undoubtedly lean on his expertise as we work to further integrate perioperative, preoperative, and postoperative care,” said Dr. Laurans.

Dr. Johnson is board certified in General Surgery and in Surgical Critical Care. He also has certifications for Advanced Trauma Life Support Provider, Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor, and Advanced Trauma Operative Management.

Dr. Johnson earned his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta and his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine. He completed his residency training in general surgery from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Department of General Surgery in Galveston; and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Department of General Surgery in Nashville. He is fellowship-trained in surgical critical care and acute care surgery at Yale School of Medicine, Department of Surgery.
