Afifa Adiba

Afifa Adiba, MD, completed her psychiatry residency at University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). She served as a chief resident of UMMC Adult Psychiatry Program. During her residency, Adiba was involved with advocacy and research. She worked with the local organizations to reduce stigma against mental health and gave several talks to the community against the stigma associated with children’s mental health. She believes that practitioners who care for children are in a great position to promote programs and activities for children’s wellbeing. She worked in a teen suicide and depression prevention project and presented to local church, school and seminars to educate the children, parents and teachers on children mental health. She also worked with her team to establish a trauma informed care system in Mississippi by using data from the patient cohort explorer to identify traumatic events in children. During her residency, she was associated with Jackson State University in a research project focused on depression, teen suicide and electronic bullying which involved in collecting data and analyzing results from the CDC survey. One of her recent research on impact of cyberbullying on teen suicide was awarded as the 2019 Beatrix A. Hamburg, MD, Award for Best New Research Poster in the AACAP annual meeting. Along with her research, she has also embraced leadership works and teaching in her career. She graduated from the Mississippi State Medical Association Physician Leadership Academy and was awarded the Nina Moffitt Award from her program and Doctor of Distinction form Mississippi State Medical Association for outstanding leadership and clinical excellence. In her fellowship, she wants to focus on pediatric trauma, depression and suicide in her clinical experience and research. In her spare time, she loves travelling, hiking and enjoying different cuisine. Her goal is to hike in all the national parks in the United State.
