Katherine "Kitty" Halloran, MD '54, Dies at 90
Katherine "Kitty" Halloran, MD '54, was one of just three female members of her Yale School of Medicine graduating class, and she later returned to the medical school for 20 years as a research physician and assistant professor. She has died at age 90.
Nobel Laureate Thomas A. Steitz Dies, Mapped the Structure of the Ribosome
Thomas A. Steitz, Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale and one of three winners of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, died Oct. 9 at his home in Stony Creek after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Steitz was 78.
In Memoriam: W. Leonard Hill, Jr.
W. Leonard Hill, Jr., LCSW, BCD, of North Haven, Connecticut, died suddenly at home on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, of cardiac arrest. He was 68 years old. He retired in 2014 from a long career in social work and psychiatry as a clinician, administrator, teacher, and mentor at Yale University, Smith College School for Social Work, and Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Yale Memorial Service for Sidney J. Blatt, PhD
Yale University will hold a memorial service for Sidney J. Blatt, Ph.D. who died on May 11, 2014. The service will be held on Sunday, November 16th beginning at 1:30 pm with a reception to follow immediately thereafter. The memorial will take place at the Joseph Slifka Center for Jewish Life at Yale.

Emeritus Professor Sidney J. Blatt, 85, died at his home on Sunday, May 11, 2014. Dr. Blatt came to Yale in 1960 as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology. He joined the Department of Psychiatry in 1963 and served as chief of the Psychology Section of the Department of Psychiatry for almost 50 years.
In Memoriam: Earl Giller, M.D., Ph.D.
Earl Laux Giller, M.D., Ph.D. passed away on April 28, 2014 at the age of 70. Giller was a long-standing member of the Yale Psychiatry faculty who, among his many roles at Yale, served as Acting Chief and Research Director for the VA Connecticut Healthcare Psychiatry Service.

Gerard Noel Burrow, M.D. ’58, HS ’66, a leading endocrinologist and expert on iodine deficiency disorders who served as dean of the medical schools at Yale and the University of California, San Diego, died on December 14, 2013.

Fred Kavli, founder and chairman of The Kavli Foundation, passed away on November 21 at the age of 86. The Foundation supports an international community of basic research institutes, including Yale’s Kavli Institute for Neuroscience, and The Kavli Prizes in neuroscience, nanoscience and astrophysics.
In Memoriam: Joseph Leonard Renda, M.D.
Joseph L. Renda, M.D. ’68, a YSM alumnus who served on the clinical faculty for many years and was one of the first from Yale to teach at Waterbury Hospital following the formation of a teaching program there in the 1970s, has died. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 5, at 10 a.m. in Battell Chapel, Corner of College and Elm Streets, New Haven.
In memoriam: Donna Diers, former dean of the School of Nursing
Donna Diers, the Annie W. Goodrich Professor Emerita, sixth dean of the School of Nursing, and American Academy of Nursing Living Legend, died on February 23 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Professor Diers will be remembered for her many contributions to the School as a teacher and administrator, but also for her contributions to the profession. She chronicled and advocated for the development of advanced practice nursing and engagement in public policy.
In Memoriam: Louis J. Kaplan
Louis Jack Kaplan, M.A., who served as associate dean for government and community affairs during a turbulent era in the history of Yale School of Medicine and played pivotal roles in the development of the institution, died on January 8 in Springfield, Va. He was 96.
