I am a quantitative respiratory biologist. During my time at the University of Cambridge I collaborated with physicists to take a computational approach to quantitate the biophysical parameters of ciliary beating in primary human airway samples, both at the individual cilium and population-based level. This is a highly sensitive, reproducible and unbiased way to characterise defective ciliary beating in various disease settings. What is more, the quantitative data provide insight into phenomena that have hitherto been completely uncharacterized. This has important implications for understanding disease mechanism and how this relates to genotype, and for pinpointing areas for potential therapeutic targeting.
