Research Summary

I am actively involved in utilizing a multi-institution pediatric sedation database to define trends in sedation and use this information to improve both the quality and safety of sedation.

I am also collaborating with the Psychiatry Department in a novel treatment for children with severe depression or anxiety disorder.

Extensive Research Description

Utilizing multi-institution pediatric sedation database to create a scoring system that will further improve patient safety. The scoring system will improve safety by identifying those patients at higher risk for complications and allow the sedation plan to be tailored to their risk profile.

We are also using unique interview tools to assess how communication between the medical team and the patient's families occurs.   These interview tools allow us to identify recurring themes and patterns in the way communication occurs in the PICU.  We are then going to utilize the themes identified during these interviews as a way to elicit change in communication patterns and ultimately improve our partnership with families.
