Extensive Research Description
Dr. Smith's research focuses on the doctor-patient relationship, specifically on patients from marginalized and stigmatized communities. He has a particular interest in social determinant of health, physician bias, the development of empathy, resident resilience and burnout, and medical trainees attitudes, perceptions and emotions. He hopes his research will help give future doctors and patients a better groundwork for developing therapeutic relationships, stronger professional bonds with colleagues, and a more humanistic approach to medicine and medical education.
