Research Summary

Substance-related and other addictive disorders (SRADs) are among the most common and costly mental health disorders world-wide. Growing evidence is available to direct clinical decision making for patients presenting with one type of SRAD. However, patients often present with complex comorbidity, including non-substance addictive disorders (e.g., gambling disorder) and conditions potentially related to addiction but distinct (e.g., binge-eating disorder). Due to the impact on course and treatment, I aim to improve understanding of SRADs comorbidity, particularly among priority populations including women and racial/ethnic minorities. Overall, I conduct research related to 1) improving measurement and understanding of SRADs comorbidity in treatment settings; 2) identifying transdiagnostic correlates of SRADs and binge-eating symptoms; and 3) examining cultural and contextual predictors of SRADs and binge-eating among priority populations.
