Research Summary

My scholarly work has focused on the creation, implementation and assessment of innovative curricula in end-of-life and palliative care education for medical students and other health professionals. Meeting the complex needs of patients with serious and life threatening illness requires physicians (and other health professionals) who are trained to be competent to address an array of care needs no matter what their practice specialty. Effective education in end of life and palliative care has been lacking as evidenced by several studies documenting unmet needs of patients and their families as well as medical school graduates and practicing physicians who do not feel adequately prepared to care for patients near end of life. My research addresses these deficits at both undergraduate and graduate level medical education. In addition, I collaborate with colleagues on advancing general medicine educational research over diverse content areas.
