Research Summary

My research focuses on the intersection of emotional intelligence, school-based creativity, and well-being in adolescents. This takes several forms. First and foremost, I am a co-developer of two approaches to social emotional learning in secondary schools: the RULER approach (, and inspirED ( In addition to the programmatic development, I lead the research (both basic and applied) that supports these programs and tests their efficacy. Additionally, I work on the development of new assessment tools that support students and educators in making data-informed decisions around their SEL implementation and tracking their success. These tools include a measure of school climate (the School Climate Walkthrough), the Momentary Emotion Assessment tool (MEA), and the Student Emotion Regulation Assessment (SERA).
