Changes of personality with the shift-like schizophrenia and the questions of rehabilitation changes of personality with the shift-like schizophrenia and the questions of rehabilitation

6th All-Russia Congress of Psychiatrists, Tomsk · Oct 1, 1990

Extensive Research Description

1. Rehabilitation for people with a mental health conditions is impossible without an appeal to personality (M.M. Kabanov). That is why in our study of schizophrenia patients, we considered each patient's psychic individuality as we considered questions related to disability and the process of patient adaptation.
2. We collected data from 179 patients with schizophrenia by focusing on individual patterns of personalities, trends in the degradation of individual traits, and their role in social desadaptation.
3. Heboid patients turned out to be most unfavorable prognostically. 70% of patients became disabled. Development of excitability was often accompanied by alcohol use.
In the group with asthenic personality changes, the disability rate was 28.6%. This distribution had no sex difference.
4. For all types of pre-manifest personalities and post-psychotic shifts, a patient's inner world's content was important. The richer and more integral it was and the subtler, more versatile, and at the same time close to reality was the spiritual life of a patient, the higher the level and stability of adaptation.
5. Improving the individual, finely differentiated approach to the rehabilitation measures in the above group of patients is necessary. For example, patients with asthenic personality should not be given group 1 or 2 disability status for as long as possible. Instead, efforts should be made to provide them with conditions to work at home or production facilities-with additional intervals during the working day, reduction, and a flexible "staggered" schedule.
Treatment and rehabilitation complex for "verschroben" type should provide special attention to family therapy and psycho-correction aimed at enhancing the significance of work activity.
