Research Summary
As a neuropsychiatrist and epilepsy specialist with a background in epidemiology, Dr. Altalib conducts research on the epilepsy outcomes as well as the relationship between seizure control and mental health. In his role as the Director of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Connecticut Epilepsy Center of Excellence, he developed a program that provides holistic care for Veterans with seizures, including psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) and co-morbid mental health issues. Dr. Altalib leads an interdisciplinary team of providers and partners with the VA National Epilepsy Centers of Excellence, analyzing national level data to standardized processes and improve organization of services. Dr. Altalib draws on both qualitative and quantitative methods to examine barriers and facilitators to serving Veterans with neurological conditions. In Dr. Altalib's role as the Director if Yale Epilepsy Outcomes Research, he oversees clinical trials of novel anti-seizure medications, cohort studies to better understand the course of epilepsy, and quality improvement projects to enhance neurological care.
