Research Summary

Dr. Oliveira conducts research in various aspects of vaccine epidemiology, such as post-licensure effectiveness, population-level impact, mathematical modeling, and vaccine-informatics. The overarching goal of his work is to develop and implement innovative strategies to improve vaccine research and decrease the burden of vaccine-related diseases. His research team brings together a diverse group of physicians and scientists with independent research programs in vaccinology, epidemiology, health informatics, and pediatric medicine. The group also includes post-doctoral research fellows, graduate, medical, and undergraduate students. Current clinical projects include: efforts to understand the clinical epidemiology and long-term outcomes of children with COVID-19 and/or MIS-C. Dr. Oliveira is also working to understand the barriers to vaccine uptake, surveillance projects to monitor HPV vaccine impact (against cervical pre-cancer, anogenital warts, and anal cancer), interventions to increase the uptake of HPV vaccine in young adults, mathematical modeling of population-level data (harmonic time series and Bayesian Model Averaging), and case-control studies to assess the real-world effectiveness of vaccines. The research performed by this working group is supported by grants from various federal and private agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Cancer Society, and the Patterson Trust Foundation.
