The annual graduation of Diagnostic Radiology residents took place June 12 at the New Haven Lawn Club as the department honored 16 graduating residents. It was a night of "sweet sorrow" to see the residents leave after four years, says Syed A. Jamal Bokhari, MBBS, MD, professor of radiology and biomedical imaging and of surgery (trauma), and director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. “But it is also a moment of great joy to see them successfully mature into radiologists that far exceed my ability.”

Richard E. Carson, PhD, emeritus and research professor of radiology & biomedical imaging, received the 2026 Paul C. Aebersold Award. This honor from the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging recognizes top achievements in basic nuclear medicine science. The group honored Carson during its annual meeting in Los Angeles, May 30-June 2. Carson is a pioneer in brain-imaging technology.

Four faculty members from the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging were honored at the Yale Diagnostic Radiology Faculty Mentoring Awards ceremony on June 24. Honored were:

Tommaso Volpi, MD, PhD, associate research scientist in radiology and biomedical imaging, has been named to the 2026 Ones to Watch list of the Society of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular Imaging (SNMMI). It recognizes early career professionals with the potential to shape the future of precision medicine across all spectrums of the field.

The Inaugural Yale Biomedical Imaging Institute (YBII) Symposium took place June 12 at Yale School of Medicine and drew a sizeable attendance. The event celebrated the institute's first year by highlighting interdisciplinary collaborations and new directions in biomedical imaging. It featured keynote speaker Bruce Tromberg, PhD, director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, and had a robust poster presentation.

In a Q&A, John Lewin, MD, associate professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, weighs in on how AI is changing the game for mammography, as well as the importance of keeping up to date with breast cancer screening.

Graeme Mason, PhD, professor of radiology and biomedical imaging and of psychiatry, has been appointed to the Advisory Council of the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, in recognition of his long history of alcohol research, mainly on alcohol metabolism, using MR imaging and spectroscopy.

Reni Butler, MD, professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, recently had an editorial published by AJR in a new column called “Beyond-the-AJR,” which features commentary on an important radiology-related investigation appearing in a major non-radiology journal. Her editorial is titled "USPSTF Recommendations and Sociodemographic Factors Impact Mammography Use" in response to an article published in JAMA.

Cristina Fuss, MD, PhD, professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, presented a Grand Rounds on May 21 at the NYU Langone Department of Radiology. Her topic was, “Women in Cardiovascular Imaging: Is it Still a Men’s World?”

Mahan Mathur, MD, associate professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, participated in a Radiological Society of North America course on GI and GU imaging. The Virtual Spotlight Course Innovations in GI & GU Imaging took place April 22-23. It provided practical, case-based education designed to support confident clinical decision-making.

Riya Mallik, PhD, a postdoctoral associate, presented at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging 2026 annual meeting, held May 30-June 2 in Los Angeles. Her presentation on research was entitled, “A Non-Steroidal 18F-Labeled Radiotracer for Imaging Estrogen Receptor Alpha (ERα).” The work was also highlighted during the Basic Science Summary session. Mallik credits her mentor, Sheryl Roberts, PhD, assistant professor, Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging.

Jules Chapiro, MD, PhD, associate professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, welcomed Jens Vogel-Claussen, MD, professor of radiology; chair and head, Department of Radiology, Charité–Universitätsmedizin, Berlin, to present a Grand Rounds on June 21. Vogel-Claussen, a globally recognized expert in cardiopulmonary imaging and lung disease research, discussed his outstanding work on lung cancer screening in Germany with radiology and biomedical residents and faculty. Babina Gosangi, MD, assistant professor of radiology and biomedical imaging, presented July 25 at the Online International Webinar: Acute Imaging Essentials, co-sponsored by the American Society of Emergency Radiology and the Society for Emergency Radiology (India). Her topic was “Acute Esophageal Pathology."

Tommaso Volpi, MD, PhD, associate research scientist, presented on PET research at the NeuroReceptor Mapping Conference in Uppsala, Sweden, June 27-30. He presented work on several topics related to his research, including:

• Repeated-dose ketamine effects on SV2A PET from the KET PD trial
• Modeling challenges of the 18F-K-40 tracer for AMPA receptors
• Automated segmentation for image-derived input functions on the NeuroEXPLORER
• First-in-human data on 18F-GATT-44 as a first-in-class tracer for GABA Transporter 1
• SV2A imaging of really small brain nuclei on the NeuroEXPLORER
