Learn more about the Yale Radiology ED Section
The Yale School of Medicine Emergency and Trauma Radiology Fellowship offers two fellowship spots per academic year.
The Yale Emergency and Trauma Radiology Section has seventeen full time faculty. Since 1998, our section has been providing 24/7 in-house coverage to the York Street Campus and has extended such 24/7 ER Radiology coverage to our other satellite sites since August 2018.
Our subsection was one of the forerunners to provide final attending reads after hours and remain one of the few academic centers which provide this level of service. With constant in-house attending coverage, we are in a unique position to train prospective fellows.
Since 2012, we have been sponsoring a hybrid ER/ MBA fellowship called the Healthcare Leadership Fellowship. After numerous inquiries about a traditional ER fellowship, we are now offering a one-year non-ACGME traditional ER fellowship.
This non-ACGME fellowship is a year-long program structured to create a radiologist who will be well versed in all aspects of Emergency and Trauma Radiology.
Elective rotations are structured to allow the fellow to gain experience in cases not directly read by the dedicated ER faculty. These include Neuroradiology to cover CTA and MRI for strokes, MRI for cord compression, and cardiac CT rotation for coronary CTAs to name a few.
The fellow will have ample opportunity to moonlight within the ED and work independent attending level shifts.
The Yale residency program is one of the largest in the country with more than 50 residents which can provide a rich networking experience.
During the core 10 blocks fellows will rotate through both on-site locations at the York Street ER, which handles the bulk of trauma imaging and the SRC campus which handles more acute non-traumatic medical patients. The shifts will be a combination of day shifts, evenings, weekends and nights closely simulating the work schedule of an ER radiologist.
4 two-week blocks (8 weeks) of electives.
Electives to include a combination of Neuroradiology, Cardiac Radiology, Abdominal Imaging, MSK or Pediatrics. Based on fellows’ interest or competence 2 electives or more can be done in the same subspecialty although 1 block is mandatory in Neuroradiology.
4 weeks which will include a total of 3 weeks of vacation and 1 week of conference time.
1 per week or average of 4/month.
Fellows are encouraged to participate in research projects. Research is not mandatory for graduation. Support for research is available if fellows have a keen research interest.
We read all imaging studies ordered from the Emergency Rooms other than MRIs. All reads are final reads as we are staffed with on-site attending coverage 24/7 with overlapping attending coverage during busy hours. We have a high volume of CTs, X rays, US and a few occasional fluoroscopic studies. We read on-site from the two main campuses which are the York Street Yale New Haven Hospital and Saint Raphael’s Hospital.
We cater to ER’s of varying severity levels: York Street is a Level 1 trauma and stroke center while Saint Raphael’s, Milford Hospital and Shoreline Medical Centers are busy ERs but not Level 1. We also provide radiology services to the West Haven VA overnight.
We have two 64 slice scanners within the York Street ED. Between the other sites, we have a combination of two additional 64 slice scanners from different vendors, one 16 slice scanner and two Dual Energy Capable 192 slice scanners on which ER patients are scanned. These are in addition to the numerous scanners which handle both inpatient and outpatient requests.
The ER section provides inpatient imaging coverage after 11pm. During the evening hours, we have a minimum of two US technologists scanning at York street and at least one at Milford and Shoreline which gives an estimate of the volume of cases available to learn from. Fellows can gain ultrasound scanning experience if they prefer.
Applications will be accepted beginning November 1, 2024, through January 8, 2025 for the 2026-2027 academic year, (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027).
In accordance with SCARD recommendations, no formal interviews will be conducted before January 13, 2025 and will be completed by March 31, 2025. Candidates selected for an interview will be contacted via e-mail and interviews will be virtual
