Elyn Saks, JD

Elyn R. Saks, training to be a psychoanalyst, earned her JD from Yale Law School in 1986. Her recent research focused on ethical dimensions of psychiatric research and forced treatment of the mentally ill. She teaches Mental Health Law, Mental Health Law and the Criminal Justice System, and Advanced Family Law: The Rights and Interests of Children. She also teaches at the Institute of Psychiatry and the Law at the Keck School of Medicine at USC and is an adjunct professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego. John Nash, PhD

John Nash is a renowned mathematician, whose story was illustrated in the 2001 movie “A Beautiful Mind.” Dr. Nash earned his PhD in economics from Princeton University in 1950 at age 22. He was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics, in recognition of his Princeton thesis on “game theory”. He was a member of the mathematics faculty at M.I.T. from 1951 -1959. Daniel Fisher, M.D., Ph.D.
Executive Director, National Empowerment Center (NEC)

According to the NEC website, Dr. Fisher is a person who has recovered from schizophrenia. He was hospitalized several times prior to becoming a psychiatrist. Dr. Fisher received his AB. from Princeton University, his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin and his M.D. from George Washington University. He is a board-certified psychiatrist who completed his residency at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Fisher travels to all parts of the country to conduct workshops, give keynote addresses, teach classes, and organize conferences for consumers/survivors, families, and mental health providers to promote recovery of people labeled with mental illness by incorporating the principles of empowerment. He has written chapters in many books, as well as a number of articles in professional journals. For more information, go to:

Dr. Daniel Fisher is also staff psychiatrist at Riverside Community Mental Health Center in Wakefield, Massachusetts. He has worked as a board-certified psychiatrist for 25 years in a variety of inpatient and community settings such as a state hospital, day treatment center, outpatient clinics, and elderly housing. He was Medical Director for a community mental health center for 12 years. Dan is a Commissioner on the New Freedom Commission; He was appointed by President Bush and is the only consumer/survivor/ex-patient on the Commission.
