Venkatesh Selected as National Academy of Medicine Fellow

September 09, 2019

The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) has selected Yale School of Medicine’s Dr. Arjun Venkatesh for its 2019 class of fellows. He has been specifically chosen to be an American Board of Emergency Medicine Fellow.

According to NAM, the purpose of the fellowship program is to enable talented, early-career health science scholars to participate actively in the work of the National Academies and to further their careers as future leaders in the field. The fellows were chosen based on their professional qualifications, reputations as scholars, professional accomplishments, and relevance of current field expertise to the work of the NAM and the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies).

During the two-year fellowship, Venkatesh will collaborate with researchers, policy experts, and clinicians from across the country. He and other fellows will help facilitate initiatives convened by the National Academies to provide nonpartisan, scientific, and evidence-based guidance to national, state, and local policymakers, academic leaders, health care administrators, and the public.

Venkatesh is an associate professor and chief of the Section of Administration in the Department of Emergency Medicine, and scientist in the Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation. His research interest is in the development of performance measures designed to improve emergency department, hospital, and health system outcomes. His work has developed measures of emergency physician and emergency department variation in imaging use and hospitalization, as well as methodologies used for national quality measurement including the CMS Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings.

He also holds a variety of national leadership roles with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and serves on several technical expert panels for the National Quality Forum and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Venkatesh co-leads the ACEP Emergency Quality Network as part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative.
