Power Awards Honor Medical Students and Residents
Fourth-year MD students Shaunte Butler and Pavithra Vijayakumar have received the Drs. Robert Rock & Tehreem Rehman Medical Student Activism Award, recognizing medical students who, in the service of equity and social justice, have taken a professional or personal risk and whose work has led to important or lasting change. Also honored at the 2020 Power Awards virtual ceremony were Paul Eigenberger, MD (psychiatry), Mollie Freedman-Weiss, MD (general surgery), Michael Hajek, MD (ENT surgery), and Katherine Penziner, MD (internal medicine primary care) as residents chosen by medical students for modeling the responsible, positive, and beneficial use of power in health care relationships and who serve as true role models for the medical student community.

The conversation marked the 19th annual Power Day, which provides an important forum for discussing the role of power in health care, and celebrates those who use it well.

Innovative Interprofessional Education for all Yale Medical, Physician Associate, and Nursing Students
For the past three years, every first-year MD, Physician Associate (PA), and Graduate Entry Pre-specialty in Nursing (GEPN) student has participated in the Interprofessional Longitudinal Clinical Experience (ILCE) course. ILCE occurs each year over 16 weeks from September through April.
Vaccine Expert Named First Director of Yale Institute for Global Health
Saad B. Omer, MBBS, MPH, PhD, has been named the inaugural director of the Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH). Omer is currently the William H. Foege Professor of Global Health, Epidemiology, and Pediatrics at Emory University’s Schools of Public Health and Medicine.
New Global Health Institute announced at Yale
The new Yale Institute for Global Health (YIGH), approved by the Yale Corporation on Dec. 8, further advances President Salovey’s goal for the university to have a greater impact on complex international issues. Led by the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, YIGH is a university-wide effort to address global health issues.
