Researchers from the Education Collaboratory will be sharing their work at the 2024 Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) SEL Exchange in Chicago, Illinois during the week of November 12th, 2024. Here’s a preview of what you can expect:
Want to learn more about how SEL Assessment can be a tool for advancing racial equity in education?
Education Collaboratory researchers Victoria Mack, Drs. Melissa Lucas, ZJ Ng, and Jessica Hoffman will present a session titled SEL Assessment for Academic Thriving and Educational Equity. This session will examine new findings from Project Flourish, a three-year research-practice partnership between Yale, Urban Assembly, and Trajectory of Hope. Working with 12 schools across California and New York, Project Flourish aims to support, refine, and leverage SEL assessments to provide meaningful and actionable information that advances academic success and educational equity. Learn more about this work at their session on November 13 at 1:15pm.
Want to discover how community-driven assessment practices can foster more equitable educational outcomes?
In Rooted in Community: Developing Equitable Approaches to Assessment, Dr. Chris Cipriano, along with Dr. Ila Deshmukh Towery from Education First, Rhonda Broussard of Beloved Community, and Dr. Sasha Rabkin from AERDF, will explore tools, resources, and research from Community Powered, a multi-year effort to codify equitable assessment approaches. This session delves into the efforts to advance assessment practices that are rooted in community goals and provide data that go beyond individual student outcomes towards a holistic, contextualized picture of schools and the student, family, and community experience. Chris Cipriano and Michael Strambler of Yale Child Study Center, Anne Gregory of Rutgers University, Lauren Kendall Brooks of AERDF, and Juliette Berg of the American Institutes for Research, along with their colleagues will be discussing the role of equity in SEL in their session The New SEL Handbook: Advancing Equity For, With, and Through SEL. This panel will discuss four chapters from the forthcoming 2nd Handbook of SEL, featuring expert contributors who address the growing tensions surrounding equity in, with, and through SEL. Topics will include a framework for SEL and equity, systemic SEL and school discipline practices, equitable and culturally responsive SEL assessment, and applications for improving school climate. Catch the full discussion on November 13 at 3:15pm.
Curious how SEL data can be used to ensure every voice in your school community is heard?
On November 14th at 10:45 am, Lynn Jeudy from Urban Assembly, with Britney Foster, and Dr. Troya Ellis of Trajectory of Hope, will further discuss the power of Project Flourish. This session explores how to make SEL data accessible to all, ensuring that every voice in the school community is included. Learn how urban schools in Los Angeles and New York intentionally used student centered SEL assessment data to spark meaningful conversations and provide practical insights for action in school. You’ll leave with hands-on experience and actionable strategies to promote inclusivity, make data-driven decisions, and champion equitable change in your school.
