Dr. Paul Kirwin Elected President of American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry for 2012–13 Term

07/20/2011: Paul Kirwin, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, was recently elected president of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP). His one-year term as president begins in early 2012.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kirwin has focused on training the next generation of geriatric psychiatrists. At Yale, Dr. Kirwin directs the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

“The association does so much important work on behalf of people who often face the double prejudice of advanced age and mental illness. Serving in this capacity is a unique way to promote creative advances in research, education, and clinical care to vastly improve the quality of life for elders.” Dr. Kirwin continued, “It is an honor to be chosen by my peers to represent them, and AAGP, in this role.”

Dr. Kirwin joined AAGP in 1996 when he was a Geriatric Psychiatry Fellow and has served the organization in many capacities. Currently, Dr. Kirwin serves on AAGP’s Board of Directors, as chair of the organization’s Teaching and Training Committee, and as chair of the group’s 2012 Annual Meeting to be held in Washington, D.C. That meeting’s theme focuses on the need for strong advocacy to ensure quality mental health care for our nation’s growing population of older adults. “It is critical,” Dr. Kirwin remarked, “that our national policies reflect the deepening scientific knowledge base surrounding health care for our elderly.”

AAGP is a national association representing and serving its members and the field of geriatric psychiatry. It is dedicated to promoting the mental health and well being of older people and improving the care of those with late-life mental disorders. AAGP's mission is to enhance the knowledge base and standard of practice in geriatric psychiatry through education and research and to advocate for meeting the mental health needs of older Americans.
