'Healing Voices' to be screened May 2 at Yale

April 19, 2017

The Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health (PRCH), Yale School of Medicine, Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, and Dignity and Advocacy Network (D.A.N.) will co-sponsor a screening of the documentary "Healing Voices" at 7 pm May 2 at Harkness Auditorium, 333 Cedar St., in the Sterling Hall of Medicine.

The 90-minute feature-length film asks the question, "What are we talking about when we talk about mental illness?" It explores the experiences commonly labeled as "psychosis" or "mental illness" through the real-life stories of three people working to overcome extreme mental states, and integrate these experiences into their lives in meaningful ways.

According to the filmmakers, “Healing Voices challenges us to rethink our cultural understanding of ‘mental illness’ by bringing a message of recovery, and charting a course for effective alternative treatments that enable people to live productive and meaningful lives.”

Discussion between audience members and a panel will follow the screening, which is open to the public. There will be a live stream Q&A with Producer/Director PJ Moynahan and Subject/Co-Producer Oryx Cohen.
