David J. Shulkin, MD, who completed a year of internship in the Yale Department of Psychiatry Residency Program before leaving psychiatry to pursue training in internal medicine, was unanimously confirmed February 13 as the ninth Veterans Affairs Secretary.
Shulkin had been Under Secretary for Health for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs before his confirmation. He was nominated for that post by President Barack Obama in 2015, and is the only former Obama administration official serving in President Donald Trump’s administration.
Shulkin, 57, is the first non-veteran to lead the Veterans Affairs Department, which serves about 9 million veterans and operates roughly 1,700 clinics and medical centers across the country. He worked for more than two decades in hospital management before leaving the private sector for the VA.
