YNHH behavioral health programs lauded as 'exemplary' in Magnet designation report

October 27, 2016

In credentialing Yale New Haven Hospital as a Magnet organization, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) cited the hospital’s behavioral health programs for “exemplary” care coordination.

ANCC lauded behavioral health based on a review of hospital-supplied paperwork and a site visit. Other programs acknowledged for offering exemplary services were the Women’s Center, Primary Care Center, critical care areas, programs for the homeless, and Virtual Hospice.

ANCC was particularly impressed that all six unique care areas use patient advisory councils to design programming.

“We are very proud of the interdisciplinary collaboration in behavioral health and excited the Magnet surveyors noted our care coordination as exemplary,” said Frank Fortunati, MD, JD, Interim Medical Director at Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital.

“The designation is important as it demonstrates that we collaborate with any and all members of the health care team along the continuum to identify opportunities to continually improve the care we deliver,” said Mark Sevilla, Executive Director, Emergency Services and Behavioral Health. “Peer reviewed studies have indicated that Magnet designated hospitals deliver improved patient outcomes.”

The Magnet designation is a prestigious honor attained by only about 7 percent of the more than 5,600 hospitals nationwide. YNHH is the largest hospital in Connecticut to achieve Magnet.

The hospital received its first Magnet designation in 2011, but this is the first time it achieved the status since the merger of YNHH and former Saint Raphael’s into a combined hospital. The re-designation includes YNHH’s York Street and Saint Raphael’s campuses, campuses at Milford and Bridgeport hospitals, and ambulatory sites throughout the state.

“Consumers of healthcare services today are increasingly sophisticated and they are choosing hospitals that have achieved Magnet recognition,” said Richard D’Aquila, president, YNHH and YNHHS, in a statement. “To be able to achieve this honor for the first time as a combined hospital … speaks volumes not only to our nursing excellence but to the wonderful way we have all come together to create an outstanding patient experience.”

Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital is the primary site for YNHH’s adult and adolescent psychiatry services.
