On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Connecticut Mental Health Center, 20 authors have collaborated on a paper that highlights the range of clinical, educational, and research initiatives offered by CMHC.
"The Connecticut Mental Health Center: Celebrating 50 Years of a Successful Partnership Between the State and Yale University" was published in the journal Psychiatric Services. It combines the work of 20 authors -- all have affiliations with the Yale Department of Psychiatry or State of Connecticut -- who wrote about the many services that resulted from the Yale and state partnership.
CMHC opened in 1966, three years after President John F. Kennedy signed the Community Mental Health Centers Act of 1963 into law. CMHC brought needed mental health services to the community while offering opportunities for young doctors to train, and for researchers to develop new theories and treatments.
Jeanne L. Steiner, DO, associate professor of psychiatry and CMHC's medical director, was the paper's first author.
CMHC has marked its 50th anniversary in 2016 with a series of events, most notably a gala celebration on September 30 attended by over 400 people.
