Pickar Authors 'Edges of the Mind: Treating Schizophrenia as Psychiatry Evolves'

1 Minute Read

David Pickar, MD, a 1977 graduate of the Yale Psychiatry Residency Program, is author of the book Edges of the Mind: Treating Schizophrenia as Psychiatry Evolves.

In his book, Pickar shares stories of his decades treating people with serious mental illness and his views on how psychiatry has transformed as a discipline.

“After a full professional life spent caring for patients with schizophrenia, I realized I didn't want to write just another scientific study,” Pickar wrote. “I wanted to tell the true stories—the stories of the patients, their families, and my own journey as a doctor trying to understand the often-painful reality of this illness.”

Pickar received his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine in 1973. He is an adjunct professor of psychiatry at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He maintains a private practice in Maryland.
