Yale School of Medicine invites you to a conversation on how we are embracing disability as a central component to achieving diversity, equity and inclusion at Yale. Learn from Yale students and faculty living with disabilities and from other subject matter experts. We hope this event will allow the Yale community to think critically about how we can create a more inclusive, accepting and positive campus culture for those who are different from us. We encourage all members of the public health and medical school, as well as pre-med, HSHM and Education Studies undergraduates to attend.
Moderator: Gretchen Berland, MD. Gretchen Berland is associate professor of medicine at Yale School of Medicine. A practicing general internist and educator, her scholarly interests include the use of the documentary format as a means to explore the patient experience and the use of media by various constituencies. An Emmy award winner and MacArthur Fellow, her work in film and in education has explored the experience of living with a disability, including the PBS documentary, “Rolling,” which featured the lives of three individuals who use wheelchairs.
Panelists: James Canton, MAR, chief executive officer of The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, which provides “a different kind of healing” to seriously ill children and their families. Monkol Lek, PhD, assistant professor of genetics, who is working on the genetics of rare diseases and its translation into genetic therapies. Arya Singh, sophomore in Pauli Murray College from New York City. She is majoring in History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health and is planning on pursuing the Education Studies pathway. Yetsa Tuakli-Wosornu, MD, MPH, assistant clinical professor (epidemiology), who is affiliated with Yale School of Public Health; International Olympic Committee (IOC) Working Group on the Prevention of Harassment and Abuse in Sport; World Obstacle Course Racing (FISO) Safeguarding Committee; International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Medical Committee.
