Esperanza Diaz, MD

Associate Professor of Psychiatry; Medical Director Hispanic Clinic and Latino Behavioral Health System; Associate Director Psychiatry Residency Program

Physician Biography

I am Associate Professor of Psychiatry, at the Yale University School of Medicine and Medical Director of the Hispanic Clinic of CMHC and the Latino Behavioral Health system. My academic and community collaborations aim to serve monolingual Hispanics in the New Haven, CT area. The services are innovative models of cultural sensitivity in psychiatry and primary care, providing training for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other health care disciplines. I have been an Associate Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency since 2008. I am a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association who in 2012 received the inaugural Assembly Member-in-Training (MIT) Mentor Award.

My initial research on medication adherence in Latinos was supported by an NIMH grant. My interests moved to improve mental health services access to minorities and to develop trainees to become culturally sensitive professionals addressing the person and their social determinants of mental health. I oversee the residency curriculum for cultural psychiatry. I participated in the development of the Cultural Formulation Interview, CFI, published in the DSM5 being the Principal Investigator for the New Haven site in the feasibility trial. I have established a national leadership reputation in the area of Latino behavioral health, as evidenced by my active involvement within professional organization committees, invited presentations, grant reviews, teaching and consultation around service delivery within the Hispanic community, and scholarship. My latest focus is to develop innovative teaching methods to address implicit bias, racism, and its influences in health disparities.
