  • Psychiatry Resident

Areej is from Pittsburgh, PA, where she completed her undergraduate degree at Carnegie Mellon University and medical school at the University of Pittsburgh. She went on to UT Southwestern for residency in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry. Areej has studied subjective cognitive decline as an early marker of Alzheimer's disease and functional outcomes after major surgery, reflecting her interest in how illness shapes behavior. She is also a co-author on a chapter on motivational interviewing in challenging clinical encounters. During residency, she found herself repeatedly encountering legal questions in clinical practice, from caring for critically ill obstetric patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) to evaluating patients in the inpatient psychiatry unit. Those experiences led her to pursue forensic psychiatry, where she hopes to better understand and navigate the interface between medicine and the law.

  • Psychiatry Resident

Hira was born and raised in Alexandria, VA. She studied cognitive neuroscience at the University of Virginia prior to completing medical school at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Hira underwent adult psychiatry training at George Washington University (GWU) as well. During her fourth year of residency training, she worked both in the United States Senate, as the American Psychiatric Association Jeanne Spurlock Congressional Fellow, and at GWU. Her experiences advocating for the mentally ill, who are often diverted to the criminal legal system, contributed to her desire to pursue a career in forensic psychiatry. Hira is also a researcher and has been a member of a multi-disciplinary team for the past fifteen years. She continues to present at national conferences and publish peer-reviewed research articles. In medical school, she served as an Editor for the Fusion Journal, a student-led annual research publication and was President of the William H. Beaumont Medical Research Honor Society. Additionally, Hira is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
