Strambler Co-Edits 'Social and Emotional Learning in Action'

April 05, 2023

Michael Strambler, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry, is co-editor of the book “Social and Emotional Learning in Action” published by Guilford Press, which will be available for purchase on April 18.

According to the authors, the book explores conditions needed to implement, strengthen, and sustain effective social and emotional learning (SEL), and identifies paths that schools, districts, and states have taken to create those conditions.

Major themes include enhancing the well-being and SEL skills of students, teachers, and school leaders, equity of access to high quality SEL, and promoting intergroup understanding in school interactions.

Chapters describe examples of initiatives that infuse SEL into classroom instruction, administrative decision making, school–family–community partnerships, and teacher training. End-of-chapter discussion questions enhance the book’s value for professional learning and course use.

“Our goal was to write a book that was accessible and useful for both educators and researchers and to provide some examples of what others have learned regarding collaborative processes of implementing SEL in an infused way,” Strambler said. “My hope that this book can make some abstract SEL concepts more concrete by illustrating what they look like in action.”

Strambler is director of Child Well-Being and Education Research at The Consultation Center at Yale. His work focuses on the role of social environments in the academic, psychological, social, and behavioral well-being of children and youth. He also studies whether and how school-based programs and practices improve the academic performance and health of children and emphasizes practical approaches for how to use data to inform practices and policies.
