AAPL Names Scholarship For Dike

August 26, 2022

The American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL) has named a scholarship for Charles Dike, MD, associate professor of psychiatry, to honor his many years of service to the organization.

The Charles Dike Scholarship is open to underrepresented racial and ethnic groups (people of color) at AAPL. The purpose of the award is to:

  • Increase membership of forensic psychiatrists from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in AAPL by creating a welcoming and supportive environment;
  • Support and enhance the growth of forensic psychiatrists within AAPL that identify as belonging to underrepresented racial and ethnic groups;
  • Encourage early career forensic psychiatrists from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in AAPL who show promise within the field of forensic psychiatry to remain active AAPL members.

Dike is a longtime member of AAPL and has served in many capacities. For four years he was assistant to the editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and for eight years he was editor of the AAPL Newsletter. He was chair of the Ethics Committee for six years, founding chair of the Forensic Hospital Services Committee, founding chair of the Diversity Committee, program chair, and AAPL Executive Council leader and member.

Eligible scholarship applicants must have completed a forensic fellowship, be a current AAPL member, demonstrated activity in AAPL, and contributed to the field of forensic psychiatry.

Applications will be received through September 15, 2022. Successful applicants will attend this year’s AAPL annual conference in October.

Dike is co-director of the Law and Psychiatry Division in the Yale Department of Psychiatry and medical director of the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.
